S1.C5. TELL ME WHY - Skype
Skype, once a pioneer in digital communication, is shutting down. Was its decline inevitable, or could Microsoft have done more to keep it relevant?
Microsoft has announced that it will retire Skype on May 5, 2025, to focus on Microsoft Teams. Skype users can transition to Teams using their existing credentials, with chats and contacts migrating automatically. Teams offers features similar to Skype, including calls, messaging, and file sharing, along with enhancements like meeting hosting and community building. Skype, launched in 2003 and acquired by Microsoft in 2011 for $8.5 billion, was a pioneer in internet-based communication. However, its user base has declined in recent years due to competition from platforms like Zoom and WhatsApp. The shift to Teams reflects Microsoft's strategy to streamline its communication services and adapt to evolving customer needs.

With the available reputation and fame, Skype have a considerable users base, why don’t they choose to resign and rennovate it to become more efficient, more modern and multi-featured than the old version, parallel to open a marketing campaign to attract more new users while still keeping its previous users?
i think platforms like skype can become outdated, and less secure. Replacing them with modern alternatives like Microsoft Teams can provide a more efficient, and feature-rich experience.
